While most of his matches have come in hardcourt competitions as one would have expected, Mannarino’s best record is on grass.
He holds a 57.6% win ratio on grass in his career, as opposed to the 47.8% on hardcourt surfaces and while the sample size on grass is much lower, it does point to how Mannarino does not quite have a problem playing on this surface.
Over the last three seasons of playing on grass – with the exception of 2020 when no tournaments were played – Mannarino has made the semifinal of at least one event. In 2019, he had gone on to win this title too, defeating David Goffin, Borna Coric and Jordan Thompson in successive matches.
He enters this match on the back of a horrid run on clay but safe in the knowledge he loves the grass courts of Rosmalen.

Fils Makes it Through the Qualifiers
Fils is just 19 and before entering the qualifiers of this tournament had never played a tournament at any level on grass. Which is why winning both his qualifiers and that in straight sets was excellent going for Fils.
He overcame Lloyd Harris in the first qualifier before downing Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second, losing eight and six games respectively in the two matches.
Earlier this season, Fils had also made the semifinal at both, the Marseille Open and Montpellier Open and then went on to win the Lyon Open title.
That meant he had done well in both, indoor hardcourt and clay court competitions, leaving the only question now if he has the technical skills to go the distance on grass.
The way in which Fils has started out on grass, it does look like he possesses that capability but he will be up against a crafty grass-courter here.

Neither player starts off as a favourite. We will give Mannarino the edge here though given his results on grass and despite his form on clay – which in turn has helped lengthening his odds.
