Defending champion Ekaterina Alexandrova is one win away from a second consecutive final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch after the fourth seed Russian reached the semifinals with a straight sets win over Emina Bektas.

Alexandrova, who beat Aryna Sabalenka for the title last year, has now won eight consecutive matches in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and will be looking to remain unbeaten over the next two days.

Ranked no. 26th in the world, Alexandrova needed an hour and 14 minutes to beat the world no. 186 Bektas 6-4, 6-4. She won 80% points on her first serve and converted 3 of 5 break points, while getting broken just once in the match.

Alexandrova had also won her first two rounds in straight sets.defeating Evgeniya Rodina 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round and  then knocking out  Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the second round.

Thanks to the three wins, Alexandrova has improved her season record to 15-11. It is the first time that the three-time WTA champion has reached the semifinal this year.

Sasnovich Advances as Samsonova Retires

After failing to win consecutive matches in any of the tournaments this year leading up to the grass season, Aliaksandra Sasnovich has won three in a row at the Rosmalen Open.

The seventh seed Belarusian made it to the semifinals after her quarterfinal opponent Liudmila Samsonova retired while trailing 6-7 (4-7), 1-3 on Friday.

Sasnovich edged a highly competitive first set tiebreak and had broken Samsonova in the fourth game of the second when the second seed pulled out of the contest due to an injury.

Sasnovich had begun her campaign with a 6-0, 6-3 thrashing of Lucrezia Stefanini in the first round. She needed three sets though to win her second round match against Greet Minnen, beating the Belgian 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The world no. 71, who has four runner-up finishes from four finals at the tour level, will be playing in her first grass court semifinal on Saturday. She is 11-13, including qualifiers this season. Can she reach her fifth WTA final?

Picking up from where she left last year, Alexandrova has looked in splendid form in this year’s Rosmalen Open. She has also been in better form than Sasnovich and it is highly likely that she will reach the final for the second straight year.
