They played once before and it was last year in Washington. Tiafoe won in three sets.

Tiafoe Excelling on Grass

Frances Tiafoe was always considered a natural fit on grass due to his speed and propensity to play cat-and-mouse tennis. The American loves nothing more than to play with his opponents as opposed to just slamming the ball as hard as you can as most modern tennis looks like.

He’s having a really good year with a 26-10 record so far this year and a chance to book a top 10 spot if he wins the Stuttgart Open. As of the time of writing this, Tiafoe is yet to play that final. He’s 3-0 on grass with a pretty good chance to win the trophy.

It would be the second trophy of his year and it would certainly be a great confidence boost ahead of the rest of the grass season. He’s 26-17 on the surface all time so he has plenty of experience playing on it.

That could come in handy against a player he’s beaten before and in a match where he’ll be the overwhelming favourite. As long as he takes the match seriously I have no worries about him being able to defeat his opponent.

Shaky Year for van de Zandschulp

It hasn’t been that great of a year for the Dutch player who had two truly impressive years before. He went 60-24 in 2021 and 43-29 in 2022 though it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll repeat that. He’s 13-13 so far this year and that’s hardly impressive.

He’s certainly capable of much more but this will be his first match on the grass. Generally, those matches go a bit shaky but for him, that’s been most of this year. He’s been pretty good on it in the past having a 9-8 record all-time on the surface.

The serve is a nice weapon to have and generally his shots are without spin so that’s useful as well. He doesn’t have the speed which is something his opponent could use against it so he’ll need to be ready for that. The serve will be key.

As long as he keeps it at a high percentage he’ll have a fighting chance in the match.

Tiafoe v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe is favoured in this match and for good reason. He’s the better player having a better year with more experience on the surface. One could argue that the game of the Dutch player fits a bit better but that’s just a minor thing. Expect the American to cruise.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Tiafoe to win: 2/5
