Kyrgios Beaten On Stuttgart Return

Nick Kyrgios’ long-awaited return to tennis was at the Stuttgart Open this past week where he suffered a first-round defeat to China’s Yibing Wu.

Kyrigos had two break points in the first set, but couldn’t penetrate the Wu serve and was broken in the very last game of the set.

A lot of tennis fans and pundits were quick to point out that Kyrgios might have rushed his comeback as he was barely even winning rallies under five shots.

He played at a walking pace in the second set with his serve being the only shot that kept him in the game.

Even with Wu’s limited experience on grass, he knew this was a chance of a lifetime, and he broke Kyrgios to love in the eighth game of the second set.

Kyrgios admitted after the match, he needed more time in order to get back to his previous level, but how much time? I guess we’ll soon find out in Halle where the Aussie reached the semifinal in his only visit last year.

Sonego Scores Big Win Over Berrettini

Lorenzo Sonego might have gone out in the round of 16 in Stuttgart, but he finally cracked the Berrettini code, as he dealt his compatriot a crushing defeat in the first round this past week.

Sonego won 6-1 6-2 in just 71 minutes. Berrettini, like Kyrgios, was playing his first match in a while after battling injuries this season.

It was right from the get-go that Berrettini was there for the taking, and Sonego punished his malfunctioning serve.

Berrettini landed 57% first serves and won 58% of points behind it. Sonego, by contrast, served exceptionally well, saving all six break points he faced in the match.

Sonego is 19-14 on grass in his career, which is not a shabby record, considering he won one of his three career titles on the lawns back in 2019. So Nick Kyrgios could be up against it on Monday.

Kyrgios v Sonego Prediction and Tip

With Wimbledon rapidly approaching, Kyrgios is running out of time to get to peak level. If what we saw in Stuttgart is anything to go by, he’s got a long way to get there. This looks like another setback waiting to happen.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sonego to win a set – Yes: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sonego to win: 1/1
