Felix Auger-Aliassime v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

Dominic Thiem leads the head-to-head 1-0. Thiem defeated Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16 at the 2020 US Open in straight sets and went on to lift his only grand slam title.

Disastrous Clay Swing Costs Felix Top-10 Spot

Felix Auger-Aliassime will be unstinting in his efforts to return to the world’s top 10, but after a disastrous clay-court swing, he finds himself outside the top 10 and potentially losing further ground in the coming weeks if there is no marked improvement in results.

Up until Indian Wells, you could say his season was above-average, but he’s won a paltry two matches between Miami and the French Open, in that span he played in five tournaments.

Auger-Aliassime was hampered by a shoulder injury he picked in Lyon and was forced to withdraw from the event with the French Open in mind.

But the Canadian was visibly off pace in Paris where he became the first top-10 player to exit the tournament when he was beaten in straight sets by Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in the opener.

Auger-Aliassime admitted his shoulder was far from great and had been unwell a day before, leading to rumors it might have been the viral illness sweeping through this year’s French Open that affected some players.

Halle is his next stop. It’s his first tournament of the grass-court swing and will play his first match in over two weeks when he takes on Dominic Thiem.

Thiem Accepts Halle Wild Card

Since his return to the ATP Tour last year, Dominic Thiem has looked a shadow of the player that won a Grand Slam title and reached a career-high No. 3.

Thiem’s biggest attribute so far is his attitude. He’s been extremely positive even with results deserting him. He finished 2022 with a 52.9% win rate which is his lowest in a completed season since 2014.

Thiem is even worse on Tour this year, recording a 35% win rate, accounting for just seven wins from 20 matches. He has played Challenger tennis in order to restore a semblance of confidence and he has slightly healthier five wins from nine.

Still, the picture is grim. Thiem lost in the first round of the French Open to Pedro Cachin, a tournament he reached back-to-back finals before, and one in which he ought to have been the favorite in his peak in the absence of Rafael Nadal.

What is even more perplexing is that he played at the Perugia Challenger this week on clay after accepting a wild card to Halle.

Auger-Aliassime v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Neither player has hit a healthy patch of good form, but Thiem playing a Challenger on clay this week with Halle around in the corner is a bit of a shock. Expecting the Austrian to take time to adjust to grass.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Auger-Alissime to win: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win in three sets: 13/5
