Medvedev Shocked in Rosmalen Opener
Medvedev looked to have shocked the world with his Italian Masters title triumph earlier this season but he has had himself been at the receiving end of two surprises.
At the French Open, Medvedev was stunned in the very first round by Thiago Seyboth Wild and as he came into the Rosmalen Open for his first match on grass for 2023, he was usurped in his opener.
This was despite starting out a 1/5 favourite against French veteran Adrian Mannarino, who overcame a first set deficit to stun the Russian.
While clay has always been Medvedev’s bugbear, he has done well on that surface this season. The question is if he can overturn his early defeat last week in Rosmalen and also go on to improve his overall win-loss record on grass which stands at 33-17.
That gives him a winning percentage of 66% on grass, which isn’t something to be scoffed at but he still trails his own showing on hardcourt where he a whopping 75%.

Giron Makes it Through Qualifiers after Stuttgart Stumble
Despite starting out as a favourite in his opening round match against Jiri Lehecka at the Stuttgart Open last week and after winning the first set too, Giron was shocked and sent packing in that opener.
He has followed it up well here with successive qualifying wins over Pavel Kotov and Andrea Vavassori which has given him another chance to win a main draw encounter on grass but he now faces the world number three in his first round here.
And it’s a world number three who is baying for blood after a couple of shock losses.
Giron is 29 years old but had never played on grass before 2019. Even since then his record on this surface is 6-7 in main draws of competitions, making him quite inexperienced at this level.
Can he put up a challenge here?
