After a fantastic run on hard courts, Donna Vekic was slowed down by clay and the start that she got in Nottingham hasn’t been encouraging either.
Vekic won her opener against Cristina Bucsa in Nottingham, but went down in the second round to Viktorija Golubic.
She will be disappointed not to have gone deep in Nottingham but would like to make amends in Berlin, where the world no. 23 makes her debut.
The 26-year-old Croatian has a 22-9 record in 2023. She had reached her maiden Australian Open quarterfinal this year and also won her fourth WTA title in Monterrey.
Vekic has played three of her 11 career finals on grass, winning one of those titles in Nottingham in 2017. Can she find form on grass in Berlin by making a deep run?

Varvara Gracheva has played some high quality tennis this season and has been one of the most consistent performers as a result of which she has also moved up the rankings, breaking into the top 50 in April after having started the year at no. 100.
Currently ranked no. 43, Gracheva will be playing her first grass court match of the season. She has played just two matches on the surface before and has lost both of them. Both those defeats came in 2021 as she made first round exits from Bad Homburg and Wimbledon.
So Gracheva will be looking to record her first-ever win on grass in Berlin.
She brings a 28-17 record into the tournament and that includes qualifying round wins that she accumulated this year.
Gracheva also reached her maiden WTA final in Austin, only to finish runner-up to Marta Kostyuk. In addition, she made her round of 16 debuts in Indian Wells and Miami and reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.

Both players did well on hard courts and will be looking to replicate that form on grass.
