Maria Sakkari v Alize Cornet Head to Head
Maria Sakkari leads Alize Cornet 3-1 in their head-to-head. However, they played each other this past week in Nottingham where Cornet routed the Greek 6-4, 6-1.

Sakkari Routed By Cornet in Nottingham
This will be a grass-court redux between Maria Sakkari and Alize Cornet. Sakkari was beaten quite comprehensively in Nottingham at the Rothesay Open by the wily Frenchwoman, 6-1 6-4.
It is the third tournament in a row that Sakkari has failed to string back-to-back wins, and pressure is building on the Greek who might lose her top-10 ranking with another early exit.
While Cornet has a wealth of experience on grass at her disposal, Sakkari’s record isn’t too bad. She was a semifinalist in Berlin at this time last year, although it could be argued that she was a recipient of a very kind draw.
This year, she has a treacherous path to reach the last four. If she scales past Cornet, there is a potential collision with Victoria Azarenka in the second round. Defending champion Ons Jabeur is her projected quarterfinal opponent.
With just a single top-10 win this season, Sakkari’s 21-12 record for the season could really put her as a sizable underdog should she get into the last eight.

Cornet Falls to Burrage in Nottingham
In as much as Alize Cornet tried to play a pantomime villain in Nottingham, the 2023 Rothesay Open was all about the Brits, and Cornet was unable to change that script.
The Frenchwoman played a fine tournament under the radar, reaching her first semifinal of the season, with wins over Katie Swan, Maria Sakkari, and Elizabeth Mandlik.
But the 33-year-old lost a tight two-setter to Jodie Burrage in the semis, who went on to headline the first all-British WTA final in 46 years.
Cornet is among the few active old guards who play with distinction on grass. She has 33 wins on the surface, including a handy list of victims such as legendary American Serena Williams, Grand Slam champions Bianca Andreescu, Garbine Muguruza, and Iga Swiatek.
Last week’s win over Sakkari in Nottingham was her first top-10 win since ending Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak at last year’s Wimbledon. Will lightning strike twice when she faces the Greek No. 1 again?
Sakkari v Cornet Prediction and Tip
Fully expecting Sakkari to turn up here knowing what’s at stake in regards to her ranking. Cornet, at 33, showed some signs of fatigue in her defeat against Burrage, maybe a sign that she has lost a footstep that made her one of the quickest players on tour.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Sakkari to win: 8/15
- Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 7/5
