World no. 75 Xiyu Wang made it to the main draw with consecutive straight set wins in the qualifying rounds.
Wang ousted Britain’s Emily Appleton 6-3, 7-5 in the first qualifying round and then defeated Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-3, 6-3 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
The Chinese player is 10-12 across levels this year and this will be her second grass court tournament of the season. She had lost her opening round match in Nottingham against Maria Sakkari.
Her best finish this year was a round of 16 finish in Rome, she had also made it to the third round in Madrid.
Wang has not reached the quarterfinals in any of the tournaments this year. Can she make a good start in Birmingham?

Facing the qualifier Wang will be lucky loser Rebecca Marino.
Marino had dumped out Anastasia Zakharova in the first qualifying round with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
She was, however, beaten in the second qualifying round by Ana Bogdan 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.
This will be the 32-year-old Canadian’s third appearance in Birmingham. She had made it to the round of 16 in 2011 but was beaten in the first round last year.
Marino is 11-14 across levels this year. This will be her second grass court tournament of the season. She was beaten in the first round in Nottingham by Harriet Dart.
Marino has not won consecutive main draw matches this year and she is 4-11 at the tour level. Can the Canadian find form in Birmingham?
