Musetti Solid against Choinski

Jan Choinski is ranked 167th in the world and has struggled on grass all his career. Even at the lower level.

Which is why it was no surprise that he started out a 6/1 underdog against Musetti in their opening round encounter, and the Italian player overcame a slowish start to live up to those odds.

Musetti came through 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes to make it to the second round for the second grass court competition in a row, having earlier done the same in Stuttgart last week. There he had overcome Borna Gojo and Gregoire Barrere before losing to Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals.

Here, the two players traded breaks in the first four games of the encounter but once Musetti had gotten the better of Choinski’s serve in the seventh game, there was no looking back for him. He quickly wrapped up the set and then broke his opponent twice in the second set to seal the deal.

Things could get slightly more difficult come the second round.

Shelton Shocks Wolf

Shelton was on a five-match losing streak at the highest level and he was 11/10 coming into this opening round encounter against fellow American JJ Wolf.

It took him two hours and four minutes and two tie-breakers to break that poor form as he edged out Wolf 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) to seal his first ever win on grass. Incidentally he was on his grass debut too.

Wolf had the early lead in the encounter, going 3-0 up but he dropped his serve soon after and lost the ensuing tie-breaker. In the second, it was Shelton who went 3-0 up but was broken back.

In the tie-breaker that followed, however, Shelton did not allow Wolf a sniff of a chance as he cruised to a 5-0 lead. Wolf pulled back with a couple of successive points but Shelton completed the win soon enough.

Can he now use his booming serves against Musetti to tame the Italian world number 16.
