Donna Vekic defeated Varvara Gracheva 6-3, 6-2 in the opening match of the 2023 German Open. It was a good practice run of sorts for the Croat, who arrived in Berlin following a shock round-two exit in Nottingham last week at the hands of Viktorija Golubic.

That 90-minute affair against Gracheva certainly gave Vekic some much-needed grass rhythm. She has a decent track record on the surface; a champion in Nottingham in 2017 and runner-up in two other WTA events.

After battling injury & health-related concerns for some time over the last season, Donna is getting her groove back.

She is now World No. 23, with a record of 21-9 for the season. To list her highlights, there is her title run in Monterrey (beating Caroline Garcia in the final) and quarterfinal feat in the Australian Open. Vekic also featured in the fourth round in Rome.

Rybakina Beats Kudermetova

Second seed Elena Rybakina moved past the Russian qualifier Polina Kudermetova with little resistance; she took the match 6-4, 6-2 in just an hour and eight minutes.

Now World No. 3, the reigning Wimbledon champion is coming off a minor fitness scare that saw her retire in the third round of the French Open.

Before that, the Kazakh enjoyed a pretty flawless season – titles in Indian Wells Open and Italian Open and runner-up feats in Miami and the Australian Open. All in all, Rybakina is now 31-7 in 2023.

Over the years, Elena has performed decently on grass, but it is hard to say if she has a solid flair for the surface. For instance, she did lose early in Eastbourne last season to Lesia Tsurenko but later won the SW19 Major. The year before, she was 7-3.

  • Low-Risk Tip: Rybakina to win: 10/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games: 5/6
