Taylor Fritz v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both have won two apiece. Their only match-up on grass came in Nottingham in 2016 and Mannarino had won that in straight sets but more recently in Delray Beach earlier this year, it was Fritz who came away an easy winner.

Fritz Not a Smooth Opening Winner

It wasn’t a surprise to see Fritz start off a 1/13 favourite in his opener against Bernabe Zapata Miralles. What did turn out to be a surprise was the amount of time and effort it took Fritz to go past his opponent and seal his second round berth.

Fritz was on court for an hour and 25 minutes and had to endure Zapata Miralles’ strong defences, especially in the second set before he won 6-4, 7-5.

The good news for Fritz was his serving rhythm was on and that meant he won all but 10 of the points on his serve. On the other hand, he broke his opponent twice – one very early in the opening set and the second was late in the second.

What needs to be seen is if he can up his returning ante against a player like Mannarino whose experience could make things difficult for Fritz. For now though, Fritz knows he has his serve to bail him out of trouble if push comes to shove.

Mannarino in a Comeback Win against Broady

Liam Broady made life difficult on court for Mannarino in their opener but once the Frenchman had rediscovered his lost rhythm he came back to win it in three.

In a match lasting more than two hours, Mannarino dropped his serve twice in the first two games and never recovered from that to lose the opening set with ease. And when he went 2-0 down in the second set as well, the writing seemed to be on the wall.

Except that Mannarino is made of sterner stuff as has been on show in recent times.

He broke back in the fourth game of the second set and very soon had pushed Broady on to back-foot with his much improved serving. A late break in the second set followed by another one in the fourth game of the decider was all that Mannarino needed to carve out a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win and move into the second round.

Having already beaten Daniil Medvedev on grass this season, Mannarino will hope to get going against Fritz too as he looks to add on to his list of scalps for the year which has already seen John Isner, JJ Wolf and Hubert Hurkacz.

Fritz v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Fritz starts a favourite here but not before Mannarino has given him a good working over.
