Short-Lived Top-10 Stay for Haddad Maia

After achieving her best run at Grand Slam level at the French Open (reached the semifinal, becoming the first Brazilian woman to make it at that stage of a major since Maria Bueno), Beatriz Haddad Maia vaulted into the world’s top 10.

It was a significant landmark for the southpaw who became the first Brazilian woman in the Open Era to break the world’s top 10. But unfortunately for Haddad Maia, it came at a cost.

Having the bulk of points from 2022 to defend on grass where she had a 12-2 record on the surface with two titles, Haddad Maia was visibly fatigued in her first match on grass this season.

It came just five days from her semifinal defeat to Iga Swiatek. She was outplayed by Ukrainian lucky loser Daria Snigur in Nottingham and eventually lost in straight sets in the first round.

She skipped Birmingham, meaning all 280 ranking points will be chalked off when the new rankings are released on Monday.

Haddad Maia is currently 13th in the live rankings as a result and will need to make the deep end of the draw in Eastbourne where she reached the semis last season in order to stay in touch with the world’s top 10.

Losing Start on Grass for Bouzkoa

Marie Bouzkova, like Haddad Maia, also made a losing start to this year’s grass-court swing as she was swept aside by Bernarda Pera in the first round in Birmingham.

The Czech is now 7-13 for the season. It’s been an underwhelming campaign for a player who not too long ago threatened to crack the top 20.

In fact, Bouzkova’s record of 12 wins against that exclusive club of players placed her among the most dangerous floaters in big tournaments against the world’s top 20.

Bouzkova has won back-to-back matches at WTA level in just one tournament this season, and has a string of early losses in her register.

However, the 24-year-old is very much capable of turning her season around. Last year, she made the last eight at Wimbledon – a run that included wins over Danielle Collins and Caroline Garcia – and even took a set from Ons Jabeur, the eventual finalist, whom she lost to in the quarterfinals.

Bouzkova has done just about enough to cling to her top-32 ranking which means she will be seeded in her second Grand Slam in a row.

Haddad Maia v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip

Both players desperately need a win here. Haddad Maia cannot afford to lose further ground in the rankings with another early defeat. So two weeks of rest time should be enough to get her game firing again.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Haddad Maia to win: 2/5
