Garbine Muguruza v Monica Niculescu Head to Head
Muguruza is heading into this match on the back of a 1-0 lead over her Romanian adversary. The two met in the 2016 WTA Linz and the Spaniard won comfortably with 6-1, 6-1.
An Impressive Showing by the Number 20 Seed
One of the 2018 French Open semifinalists, Muguruza’s performance over the last couple of weeks has been fairly good. Following a soft start to the season, she is finally gaining some traction.
At the Indian Wells, she reached the quarterfinal with some brilliant tennis and a little bit of luck. With a bye into the second round, she then defeated Lauren Davis to set up her third-round tie with Serena Williams. On the back of Serena’s withdrawal from the game, Muguruza moved on to defeat Kiki Bertens next.
This is her second such showing this season, with the other one being the Hua Hin Championships. She also reached the fourth round in the Australian Open, ultimately losing to Karolina Pliskova. Muguruza hasn’t won a title since last year’s Monterrey Open and hasn’t been on the same level as she was once before.
Niculescu with a Strong Start
Niculescu’s bid for the Miami Open title was strong with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tamara Zidansek. As a qualifier, this is the first time since the end of January that she has reached the second round on the WTA Tour. Her last couple of attempts in Dubai and Indian Wells ended in early defeats in the qualifiers.
Her best run came in Shenzhen at the start of the season when she reached the quarterfinal, all the way as a qualifier. After that, it was first-round defeats in Melbourne and Hua-Hin.
The Romanian, who peaked at the No. 28 spot back in 2012, hasn’t lifted a title since 2016.
Muguruza v Niculescu Predictions & Tips
This should prove to be a win for Muguruza but not without its challenges as Niculescu will put up a good fight. In most of her recent losses, she moved to lose the match only after winning at least four games in each set.
