Bogdan Surprises Cirstea

In an all-Romanian battle, Bogdan was able to get past Sorana Cirstea to make it to the second round.

Following on from back to back wins in the qualifiers against Panna Udvardy and Petra Martic, Bogdan clinched a place in the second round by overcoming her countrywoman 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. The match lasted two hours.

Bogdan lost her serve four times in the match, including late in the decider but by then she had already taken a 5-1 lead and Cirstea couldn’t do much to stall her opponent’s juggernaut.

Where Bogdan held the edge was on her second serves in which she won 59% of her points while she also won 55% of Cirstea’s second serves. Can she now make it two in two for the first time this season this WTA Dubai in February?

Garcia Eases Past Brengle

Caroline Garcia came into this tournament having made the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open. She would have liked to do a lot better but going up against Petra Kvitova – and in-form Kvitova at that – was always going to be a challenge.

The Frenchwoman went down in straight sets there and what that has meant is Garcia opted to feature in Eastbourne this week. A run to the final in Berlin or a title win would have been a deterrent for her.

Here, in the first round, Garcia was an easy winner over Madison Brengle with the world number five clinching her second round spot 6-1, 7-5.

In a match lasting an hour and 20 minutes, Garcia did lose her serve twice but managed to get past Brengle’s serve five times. What could worry Garcia is her service which saw her face 10 brea-points. A better showing on that front would be much needed but either ways, she will be a huge favourite here.

Garcia v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Garcia can be expected to clinch this in straight sets and cruise through to the quarterfinals.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Garcia to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Garcia to win in straight sets: 1/1
