Martic Continues to Benefit
Petra Martic began her campaign in Eastbourne by dismissing Katie Boulter 6-4, 7-5, in the first round. Then, she benefited from Beatriz Haddad Maia’s retirement in the second set at 6-4, 3-2.
Originally, the Croat began as a qualifier but lost to Ana Bogdan in the final prelim match. The lucky loser rule, however, gave her a ticket to the main draw.
The journey comes as a reprieve for Martic, who has lost 13 matches this year while winning only 17. Nonetheless, she is World No. 30 and has the experience & skills needed to stage a resurgence.
Martic is coming off an average clay spell. Except for her quarterfinal showing in Madrid, she was beaten early in Rome and the French Open thereafter – respectively, by Camila Osorio and Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Earlier in the season, Petra was the runner-up in Linz, which greatly helped her stay afloat in the top 50.
As for her form on grass, she reached round four in Wimbledon thrice – most recently in 2022.

Keys Finding Her Groove
Madison Keys of the USA made it to the quarterfinal in Eastbourne following straight-set wins over Tereza Martincova and Xiyu Wang. Both those matches saw a tiebreak, but in a way, it was good practice for Keys, who is competing in her first grass tournament of the year.
Now ranked World No. 25, Madison last played in the French Open, where she fell to Kayla Day (then #138) in round two in three sets.
Such has been the 2023 season for the American, brimming with ups and downs. That said, Keys has had her moments – a title run in the United Cup and quarterfinals in Dubai and Charleston.
She has some history in Eastbourne as well; she was a champion here in 2014. The following season Madison was a quarterfinalist in Wimbledon, and since then, she has reached only the round four at SW 19 just twice.
