Bautista-Agut a Semifinalist at Halle

After having made a solid start to the 2023 tennis season, Bautista-Agut hasn’t had a similar run in recent times. In fact since making it to the fourth round of the Australian Open, Bautista-Agut had played in 11 tournaments at the highest level did not win successive matches in even one of them.

That’s right, his best showing across a string of 11 tournaments leading up to the grass swing was a mere first round win.

It was at Halle recently that Bautista-Agut looked to have turned a bit of a corner. He made the semifinal in that tournament on the back of three solid showings, which included wins over Brandon Nakashima and Daniil Medvedev in successive matches.

Bautista-Agut loves his time on grass as can be seen from his turnaround at Halle and the fact that his best performance in a Grand Slam tournament has come at Wimbledon too. He was a semifinalist in 2019 here and would be looking at these two stats to kick-start what he would hope is a long stay in this competition.

Safiullin Trying to Find Way on Grass

Most of Safiullin’s successes have come in hardcourt competitions but credit where it’s due. He has done well to try and convert those performances on grass when it could have been easy for him to focus on his core competencies.

This season, for instance, Safiullin has attempted to feature in all three grass court competitions in the lead-up to Wimbledon.

At the Stuttgart, Safiullin failed to make it past the qualifiers but he turned things around at Halle where he did just that. Jan-Lennard Struff got the better of him in the opener.

And then finally at the Mallorca, Safiullin registered his maiden grass win. Again, starting out as a qualifier, Safiullin made the second round before going down to Lloyd Harris.

Here the Russian will find things rather tough against a player who has made grass his own but given his attitude we could see Safiullin give his opponent a fight.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Bautista-Agut to win AND Over 30.5 games in the match: 7/5
