Eastbourne Quarter-Finalist Ymer

The days when Swedish players were a major force at Wimbledon are long gone, with the exploits of Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander lost in the mists of time.

Nowadays it is left to Ymer to carry the flag for his country, and he has never been beyond the second round here.

Thrown out of the Lyon Open for smashing his racquet on the umpire’s chair, that seemed to affect Ymer’s game for a while and his results suffered as a result.

Ymer was beaten in his next three matches, in the first round of the French Open, and his first two matches of the season on grass, in Rosmalen and Halle.

There was some improvement in Eastbourne last week, though, where he defeated both Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands and Liam Broady of Great Britain, both in straight sets, before falling at the quarter-final hurdle, losing in three sets to Mackenzie McDonald of the USA.

Molcan Reached Third Round Last Year

In his first appearance in the main draw of Wimbledon last year, Molcan reached the third round, which was a minor surprise for a player primarily known as a clay court player. He has never been further in a Grand Slam before or since.

However, having appeared in two clay court finals last year, the Slovak number one has not been having the best of seasons, and his ranking has dropped as a result.

He did not switch to grass immediately after the French Open, but persisted on clay, reaching the semi-final of a Challenger event on home soil in Slovakia.

When Molcan did finally make the move, it was for the exhibition tournament, the Boodles Challenge, where he beat Alexei Popyrin and Hubert Hurkasz, before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

Ymer v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Neither man has a good record in Grand Slams generally, and neither is particularly at home on grass.

However, based on recent results, Ymer will begin the match as the clear favourite.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ymer to win: 6/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 38.5 games in the match: 17/20
