Paul at Career-Best Ranking after Eastbourne Showing

Having hit a ranking of 15th two weeks earlier, Paul had fallen two spots coming into the Eastbourne International after his first round defeat at the Queen’s Club Championships.

Paul turned that around with a solid showing in Eastbourne, where he reached the final of the event before falling to Francisco Cerundolo. The American hasn’t been at his best in recent times and that could have cost him a shot at his second ATP title but nevertheless it has been a strong showing from him before Wimbledon.

After defeating Sebastian Baez in the very first round there, Paul then sent fellow American JJ Wolf on his way in the quarterfinal. And a straight-set win over Gregoire Barrere helped him make it to the final.

Earlier this season, Paul had also made the second round of the Stuttgart Open before Jan-Lennard Struff snuffed out his title hopes there.

Can Paul, who had made the fourth round at this tournament last season, give himself a chance to repeat that showing?

Mochizuki on Grand Slam Debut

A junior Wimbledon winner in 2019, Mochizuki has made it to the main draw of his first ever Grand Slam at this very tournament just four years on.

Mochizuki enters the first round here on the back of three shock victories in the qualifying rounds. In all three matches, against Hugo Grenier, Lukas Klein and Piros Zsombor, he was longer than 6/5 odds to make it through and did just that.

What that means is that whatever the result of this match, Mochizuki would have broken into the top 190 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in his time out as a professional tennis player.

The seven-time Futures and one-time Challenger title champion will now face the toughest battle of his short career but he has had his time under the London sun before this and should feel that much more confident than any other debutant.

Paul v Mochizuki Prediction and Tip

Paul’s experience and pedigree should help him see this one through but we think Mochizuki could end up bringing home a set here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Games Handicap Mochizuki +7/5: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Paul to win in four or five sets: 7/5
