Jabeur Sizzles in Frech Win

A finalist at last year’s Wimbledon, Jabeur did not spend too much time on court in her opening round win over Magdalena Frech at this year’s tournament.

Needing an hour and 18 minutes against Frech, Jabeur broke Frech twice in both sets to come through 6-3, 6-3. There was a moment of a fightback from Frech in the fifth game of the second set when she broke back to level things out at 3-3 but Jabeur upped the ante under pressure.

In the eighth game, she earned three break-points and converted the third one of them before serving it out to 15 to make the second round.

This follows a rather below-par start to the grass swing from Jabeur who was knocked out in the first round of the Berlin Open by Jule Niemeier and then lost her second round match at the Eastbourne International. This time it was Camila Giorgi who knocked her out.

A third round berth shouldn’t be too much of an issue for Jabeur here.

Qualifier Bai Makes it Past Bonaventure

Featuring in her very first Grand Slam, Bai came through three qualifying wins to make the main draw at this competition. But that’s not where her campaign ended as the 191st-ranked player then sent Ysaline Bonaventure packing in the first round after showing signs of sparkle throughout the qualifiers as well.

Bai needed an hour and 14 minutes to cruise past Bonaventure, winning 7-6 (0), 6-1.

Bonaventure, who had gone into the encounter as a favourite, took a 4-1 lead in the first set but once Bai got going she broke her twice to get to serving for the first set at 6-5. The Chinese player failed to do that but came out roaring in the tie-breaker, slamming seven straight points.

Deflated from the one-sided nature of the tie-breaker, Bonaventure lost her serve twice in a row in the second with Bai cruising through.

Overcoming Jabeur will be a different kettle of fish.

Jabeur v Bai Prediction and Tip

Jabeur should have no worries here and a straight-set win looks the most likely result.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Jabeur to win in straight sets: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
