Paula Badosa v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Badosa Gets the Better of Riske

It was going to be a stern test of Badosa’s temperament when she took to court for her opening round match against Alison Riske what with the former world number two having not played a single match on grass this season.

Badosa lived up to her favourite tag – she was 1/3 at the start of the match – as she went on to beat her American opponent 6-3, 6-3. The match lasted a mere 70 minutes and saw Badosa not face too much strife in the entire encounter.

A break of serve in the fourth game of the match brought Badosa the early advantage who wrapped up the set quickly after that. She then broke Riske in the very first game of the second set, and while she dropped serve in the second, Badosa came back to break right back.

Soon after she had broken Riske for a fourth time in the match to seal the win and move to the second round of the competition for the third time in a row.

The last two times she was here, Badosa had made the fourth round.

Kostyuk Stuns Sakkari after Being Bagelled

She was 1-4 on win-loss coming into this tournament. Her performances on grass over the course of her short career haven’t been exemplary either.

And when Kostyuk fell to a 6-0 loss in the first set at the hands of Maria Sakkari, the writing looked to be on the wall.

Fortunately for Kostyuk, her opponent’s momentum was broken multiple times because of rain delays and that allowed her to come back into the contest.

So much so that an hour and a half after losing the first set, she had turned things around her way by winning the next two 7-5, 6-2. In the second, Kostyuk had a chance to serve it out at 5-4 but she was broken in the 10th game.

From that point onward, however, Kostyuk broke Sakkari three more times in the match to cause the second-biggest upset of the tournament – as far as the rankings are concerned.

Can Kostyuk now cause another shock as she starts out a 13/10 underdog here.

Badosa v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

The one thing to keep a close eye on is Kostyuk’s never-say-die attitude. Which is why we think this could go right down to the wire.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 10/11
