Sloane Stephens v Tatjana Maria Head to Head
Stephens and Maria have met twice on the tour and the American has won in both the cases. They last met in the 2018 Cincinnati Open, where Sloane won with 6-3, 6-2.
A Much Needed Win for Sloane
This is the first time since the Australian Open this year that Stephens has reached the third round on the tour. Between then and now, the World No. 6 incurred a series of early losses in the Mexican Open and Indian Wells Open.
Needless to mention, she hasn’t had the best of the starts to the year, winning just five matches and losing the same number of fixtures. This is certainly not in line with Stephens that we have known – the American No. 1 who was the runner-up in the French Open, Canadian Open, and the WTA Finals last season.
In a bid to overcome her poor form, Stephens started with a straight-set win over Ons Jabeur in the first round in Miami.
Tatjana Finds her Rhythm in Miami
The German too, has had a season quite similar to that Sloane’s. Her Australian Open series was a bust, losing in the early rounds in Shenzhen, Sydney, and finally Melbourne. She incurred a similar fate in Acapulco and Indian Wells too.
However, Maria did find some success in the 125K Series events in Newport and Guadalajara, where she reached the semifinal. The reigning Mallorca Open champion hasn’t got the best of records against top 10 players although, she has been known to deliver interesting results every now and then.
In Miami, she has been off to a solid start with a couple of clinical wins over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Camila Giorgi. In these two straight-set victories, Tatjana has lost only 12 games.
Sloane Stephens v Tatjana Maria Predictions & Tips
While Stephens is pegged to start this fixture as the heavy odds-on favourite, her recent tryst with the form will not make this an easy match. Maria is coming with a great deal of confidence and a couple of brilliant victories. She will fancy her chances here and give the American a run for her money.
