Frances Tiafoe v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

The pair have played each three times before.

Dimitrov won their two meetings on hard courts in 2018, at the Canadian Masters, and during the Laver Cup. But the following year, it was Tiafoe who was victorious at the Australian Open.

Tiafoe Eases into Third Round

Those who have backed Tiafoe to do well in this championship following his victory in Halle last month, will be quietly encouraged by his progress, although he would be the first to admit that his first round victory over Yibing Wu of China, was not the most convincing of his career.

A qualifier in the form of Dominic Stricker of Switzerland, was also not the most onerous second round opponent, at least on paper.

However, the Swiss, the world number 117, ensured that the match was competitive, at least in the first set which saw a number of break points created without either man being able to convert any.

In the resultant tie-break, Stricker had four set points to his name, but it was the American who eventually took it.

Tiafoe slowly began to get on top, and one break was enough to secure him the second set.

And the third was a comparative breeze for the American, who won five games in a row to wrap up the match.

Dimitrov Barely Troubled So Far

Back in 2014, Dimitrov reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, and then the fourth round three years later.

However, this has been the first time he has got beyond the second round at the All England Club for several years.

It has been plain sailing for the Bulgarian so far, as he dominated his first round opponent, Sho Shimabukoro of Japan, to the extent that the qualifier won just four games in the entire match.

Ilya Ivashka, the world number 102, represented a sterner challenge, at least in theory, and, when Dimitrov was broken in the opening game of the match, he might have feared the worst.

But he played himself into the match, and two successive breaks were enough for him to take the first set.

He then tightened his grip with an early break in the second, which he consolidated to extend his advantage.

When he broke Ivashka again in the third set the match seemed as good as over, but Ivashka responded by breaking back.

Unfortunately for him, he immediately dropped his serve again, giving Dimitrov the chance to serve out. He made heavy weather of it – he had six match points saved, and then had to save a break point himself.

But he finally made his seventh match point count.

Tiafoe v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

Having had two comparatively easy matches so far, this represents a step up in class of opposition for both men.

It promises to be a tough match, but this is the type of encounter that anybody hoping to go deep in a Grand Slam has to navigate.

Tiafoe will begin the slight favourite, but it promises to be close.
