Zverev Ends Lucky Loser’s Run

Alexander Zverev put the brakes on Yosuke Watanuki’s run after the Japanese World No. 116 briefly threatened to make life a little complicated for the favorite.

Zverev won 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-2 in two hours and 25 minutes. Despite being unsettled by Watanuki’s all-or-nothing approach, the German found his groove in sets 3 and 4 to close out the match on his own terms.

The reason why the match was as tight as the first two sets suggests, is that Watanuki was extremely aggressive from the first shot. He tallied 17 aces in the match (four more than Zverex) and registered an impressive 44 winners (at least 17 higher than the German).

Watanuki was able to spice things up with his style of play, approaching the net 36 times and being rewarded on 26 occasions – forcing Zverev to take the ball early at the beginning of the third set.

Zverev, however, made the telling numbers count. He had fewer double faults, won 84% first-serve points, and broke Watanuki five times (by comparison, the Japanese broke Zverev once).

Berrettini Scores Shock Win Over De Minaur

Matteo Berrettini wasn’t expected to have a lasting contribution at this year’s Wimbledon, but boy, is he making fun of the pre-match predictions.

Berrettini was a massive underdog to win his opening match at 6/4 against compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in a match that took three days to finish.

Berrettini, a finalist here in 2021, has been hampered by an abdominal injury for most of 2023, leaving him short on match sharpness coming to Wimbledon.

But the Italian power hitter won a three-day interrupted opener in four sets and wasted little time in pulling off another surprise, defeating 14th seed Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 6-4.

The serve was the cornerstone of Berrettini’s majestic performance in sending de Minaur home. He won 88% first-serve points (50/57).

Berrettini faced three break points but saved all three with his monstrous serve. By contrast, he had success breaking a below-par de Minaur three times.

Zverev v Berrettini Prediction and Tip

Berrettini snuck under the radar partly because predictions were based on his tearful exit in Stuttgart. But he is cleaning house with his humongous serve and he appears fit and firing on all cylinders. The top half of the draw is now very much open, and this could be a real toss-up.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Both players to win a set: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 5/6
