Carlos Alcaraz v Nicolas Jarry Head to Head

Alcaraz Records Maiden Centre Court Win

Another Frenchman stood in Carlos Alcaraz’s path at this year’s Wimbledon. Although the scoreline was not as emphatic as his beatdown of Jeremy Chardy, the World No. 1 was a class above World No. 84 Alexandre Muller in another straight-sets victory.

The bare facts – Alcaraz won 6-4 7-6 6-3 in two hours and 33 minutes. It was the first victory on hallowed Centre Court where Alcaraz’s previous appearance was a fourth-round defeat to Jannik Sinner last season.

Alcaraz continued to enjoy his adventure on grass despite his limited experience on the surface.

It wasn’t his best display on the surface as Muller, who has put together a breakthrough year on the ATP Tour, extracted a myriad of unforced errors from Alcaraz’s racket.

Alcaraz was forced to save three break points in the first set, and a further three in sets 2 and 3, to stave off the danger of Muller who was dialed in from the baseline.

The Spanish phenom will need to clean up his return game and capitalize on his chances against Nicolas Jarry. He only managed to take two of his 14 break points and won a surprising 29% of second-serve return points – paltry numbers for his high standards.

Jarry Tames Kubler

Nicolas Jarry is enjoying a superb run at Wimbledon, reaching the third round for the first time with a four-set win over Jason Kubler.

The first set was hotly contested. Kubler saved three set points from 0-40 down in the 10th game. But he couldn’t prevent Jarry’s dominance from winning the next two games to win the set. The second set was a mirror copy of the first, only that it was Kubler’s turn to puncture the Jarry serve, doing so in the 11th game. He saved a couple of break points while serving to level.

It was a match of very fine margins and there were only two breaks of serve in set 3 and 4, and each time it was Jarry making the right move. Overall, the towering Chilean recorded 30 aces to two double faults, and won 78% first-serve points.

Jarry’s previous best result here was a second-round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald in 2018. But hot on the heels of his best year on Tour, the Chilean has now surpassed that mark and is now licking his lips at the prospect of thrusting his name into the second week.

He’s done it once, and it was at this year’s French Open. But for it happen, Jarry will need to pull off perhaps the second-biggest upset of the tournament.

Alcaraz v Jarry Prediction and Tip

It wasn’t a vintage Alcaraz performance in the second round, but he’ll absolutely need to go a gear or two to beat a resurgent Jarry. Expecting Alcaraz to drop his first set of the tournament, but he’ll win the ultimate battle.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win in four sets: 11/4
