Jessica Pegula, World No. 4, will compete in the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Over the years, she has gotten progressively better in the competition, having lost in round three last time.

The American started her campaign with a demanding three-set win over Lauren Davis in the opener. Her performance has since greatly improved; she beat Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 6-0.

Ranked #3 on the doubles tour, Pegula is also participating in the mixed and women’s doubles at SW19, partnering with Austin Krajiceck and Coco Gauff.

All things considered, Jessica has had a wonderful 2023. With 34 wins to just 11 losses, the 29-year-old is all but set to close the year in the top five again. One thing that could make it all the better is a trophy – Pegula reached late rounds in many big events but never quite went the distance.

Lesia Tsurenko, like Pegula, will also make her debut in the R16 at Wimbledon for the first time. The only difference is it has been a long wait – she is achieving this feat in her 11th attempt.

The win couldn’t have been more dramatic – the Ukrainian battled it out with Ana Bogdan on Friday for three and a half hours. Tsurenko took the win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(18), with the last set along going for over 90 minutes.

The 34-year-old reached the same stage in the French Open recently but retired against Iga Swiatek, trailing 1-5. She followed that with a qualifying loss to Dayana Yastremska in Birmingham.

Nonetheless, Tsurenko has also had a pretty good year at 31-10. What’s worked absolutely well for the World No. 60 is her consistency in reaching mid-rounds.

The question now is if she has enough fuel in the tank to take on Pegula after an exhausting match.
