Putintseva Makes Bastad Semifinal

Having gotten knocked out of the first round at Wimbledon, Putintseva opted to participate in the Bastad Open the following week which is a WTA 125 competition that runs in parallel with the second week of the season’s third major.

And she did rather well with a semifinal appearance in Bastad before going down to Olga Danilovic.

Other than that, Putintseva has done reasonably well on clay with a third round appearance at the French Open adding a few ranking points to her kitty earlier this year.

What Putintseva will hope is for a deeper run in a WTA 250 tournament which helps her gain traction on the ranking chart. This was after she had hit a season-high of 40th in the world in February this year and steadily fallen away since.

Volodko Unsure on Clay

For those wondering, Volodko was formerly known as Bondarenko but changed her name after her marriage last year. She has been around for a while and the experienced campaigner was once a top-30 player.

Clay has never been one of Volodko’s favourite surface and this can be seen from the fact she played in no clay court competitions last season and has played four matches on it this year.

Two of those came in the qualifiers here and Volodko did well to make it to the main draw. Especially after having to defeat the 7/20 favourite Berfu Cengiz in the second qualifier in a hard-fought three-setter.

Now up against Putintseva who has had a good run on clay recently, things might not get any easier for Volodko. The big question is if she can put up some sort of a fight like she had in the previous round.
