Jaume Munar has struggled to win matches on a consistent basis this year and as a result of  his poor performances, the Spaniard has fallen out of the top 100 this year.

Munar, who plays his best tennis on clay, is 9-14 on the tour this year. While he has lost all five of his hard court matches, he is 9-9 on his favourite surface.

The 26-year-old had started the year at no. 58, but he has fallen 51 places to no. 109 in the world.

Munar’s best this season was a semifinal finish in Santiago, while he also reached the Round of 16 in Madrid. Additionally, he was a quarterfinalist in three clay court Challenger tournaments.

Munar is playing in Gstaad for the fourth time. He had made it to the quarterfinals last year, before going down to Casper Ruud. In his two previous appearances in 2018 and 2019, he bowed out of the round of 16.

Local hope Alexander Ritschard is playing in the tournament as a wild card.

The Swiss, wold no. 161, is making his second appearance in the tournament. Last year, he won his debut main draw match against Joao Sousa but he fell in the second round to Munar.

Ritschard is 17-19 across levels this year, but he is currently on a four-match losing streak. The series of defeats began in the final of the Lyon Challenger, where he finishes runner-up to Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves.

The 29-year-old prefers playing on clay and he is 1-1 on clay and 2-2 overall at the tour level this year. His two wins came in the first rounds in Marseille and Munich, but he fell in the second round in both the tournaments.
