Etcheverry Happy to Return to Clay

Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s ascent to become Argentina’s No. 2 player means that he could be in contention to vie for the ATP’s Most Improved Player this season.

In his first full season on the main stage, Etcheverry has risen almost 50 spots in the rankings, cracking the top 30 for the first time after his career-altering run to the quarterfinal of Roland Garros.

The 23-year-old did not drop a set on his way to that distinction before his campaign ended with a four-set loss to Alexander Zverev.

Etcheverry has been made to wait in his chase for that elusive first ATP title. He finished runner-up in Santiago and Houston – both on clay, a surface he is fond of.

After a subpar grass campaign (although he did manage to pick up his maiden win at Wimbledon), the man from La Plata will be smiling again to resume clay-court tennis in the second phase of the season. He has a seemingly daunting opener against another fast-improving player in Sebastian Ofner.

Ofner Through to Salzburg Challenger Final

Sebastian Ofner will arrive in Bastad with plenty of minutes accumulated on red clay following the conclusion of the grass swing.

In fact, Ofner’s Wimbledon campaign ended at the first hurdle, losing to Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. After taking a much-needed week off, he resumed competition in his home country at the Salzburg Challenger this week.

The Austrian World No. 72 played a fine tournament, although he escaped an almighty tussle against Nerman Fatic in the quarterfinals, coming within a tiebreak from losing that match despite going into the contest a 1/4 favorite.

Ofner made sure he wouldn’t drop his guard in the semis as he thrashed Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-0 6-2 to book his spot in his sixth final on the Challenger Tour this season.

His record in converting those finals to titles, however, is dire. He’s lost all five finals before, and that stat will play on the back of his mind when he takes on Lukas Neumayer on Sunday.

Etcheverry v Ofner Prediction and Tip

This might be a good time for Etcheverry to face Ofner. The Austrian will arrive on the back of a long week in Salzburg (due to play the final at the time of writing) and there’s a fair chance he’ll not operate at his best level in Bastad.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Etcheverry to win a set – Yes: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Etcheverry to win: 1/2
