Shuai Last Won a Match in January

It was January 31 and Shuai was playing Madison Brengle at the Lyon Open. She had only recently made the fourth round at the Australian Open and would go on to rout Brengle in straight sets to make it to the round of 16.

Form had been on Shuai Zhang’s side and in that kind of rhythm you would have expected her to roll on in that tournament and even go on to win it.

Well, that’s not how tennis goes. That’s not how life goes either but that’s a topic for another day.

Because since that day in January, Shuai hasn’t won a competitive match. And no, it’s not like she has been out of action because of injury or any such other factors. She has been a part of 12 matches spread across 12 tournaments and won nothing.

In this period, Zhang has won a mere three sets too, pointing to a sudden form-dive, and even she knows things have been going awry for her as she broke down in a press conference after the French Open.

Since then she has lost a few more matches but at some point she should be able to turn the things around and kick-start a winning run again.

Tóth Makes Main Draw Debut

Having made her doubles main draw debut at the highest level in this very tournament in 2021, it’s Toth’s chance to now do the same on the singles circuit.

The 20-year-old Toth has never been ranked higher than 534th in the world in singles and is more proficient on the doubles circuit where she has a top ranking of 264th.

As far as playing surfaces go, Toth does well on clay having played in 22 of her 25 matches on clay this season. Overall in her career, she has featured in a mere 17 matches outside of clay and 96 on the red dirt surface.

Which will work to her advantage against a player who has looked clueless this season but more so on clay in her career.

Can Toth win her maiden main draw singles match?

Shuai v Tóth Prediction and Tip

Such has been the lacklustre showing from Shuai that it’s quite possible she might fall to her 540th-ranked opponent here. Might see a third set though.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
