Never been ranked in the top 100 in his career before this, Broady had come into the 2023 Wimbledon with just one win on grass for the season.
First and second round defeats at the Surbiton Challenger and Nottingham Challenger respectively meant that Broady wasn’t expected to do too much at his home Grand Slam either.
That he didn’t just overcome Constant Lestienne but also stunned Casper Ruud in five sets at Wimbledon meant that Broady had made the third round at a major for the first time in his career.
In that third round match, Broady went on to take the first set against Denis Shapovalov before falling in four.
Continuing with that theme of wanting to play on grass, Broady has come over to Newport to feature in this tournament for the second time in his career. The last time he played, in 2022, he was sent out by James Duckworth.
This time around he has a better chance of clinching his opener.

A former junior’s champion at Wimbledon, Mochizuki recently made his Grand Slam debut when he qualified for the men’s singles draw at that same tournament four years on. While Tommy Paul got the better of Mochizuki in the first round at the 2023 Wimbledon, the Japanese player would have relished the opportunity to have made it that far.
This was after Mochizuki had tried his hand at qualifying for Wimbledon once before but fallen in the second qualifier then.
What made that even more special was earlier during the grass swing, Mochizuki had tried his hand at two other grass court competitions at the Challenger level – in Nottingham and Ilkley – and at both, he was sent packing in the qualifiers.
All of it might not count for a lot given his opponent here is ranked way higher and should hold the aces, but here’s the deal – Mochizuki’s three wins at the Wimbledon qualifiers had all come against players who had gone into those matches as at least 4/6 favourites.
