Shnaider Knocks Out Defending Champion Pera

Diana Shnaider scored her second top-30 win on Tuesday, ousting defending Budapest champion Bernarda Pera 6-4, 7-5, in exactly two hours.

Shnaider’s other previous big win also came on clay in Charleston where she defeated a former winner of the event in Veronika Kudermetova. It’s been a fantastic start to life on the main tour for Shnaider who not long ago was inside the world’s top 100.

And the 19-year-old showcased her burgeoning aggressive game, utilizing her ferocious forehand to move Pera around the court. The American is no slouch on clay and hits with a killer topspin. Shnaider, however, made sure, she suffocated her with her attacking brand of tennis.

Judging by how this match started, it clearly looked like Pera was in for a battle. The American who was slow off the blocks, dropping her serve twice, and trailed 1-5 on the score. Pera to her credit managed to get the set on serve.

Although the Russian wasted two set points while serving for it at first instance, she closed it out eventually with another break.

In the second set, both players were for the most part erratic, but that is to be expected on the grueling red clay, but the quality was still quite high, with plenty of lung-busting rallies, none more evident than on match point where Shnaider finished off Pera with her laser-like forehand.
