Rublev Subdues Kotov Despite Late Resurgence

Pavel Kotov tried to push Rublev late in the second set but in the end, it was the Russian who came through in straight sets to enter the quarterfinal.

Following a first round bye and having not played on clay since his third round exit at the French Open, Rublev was expected to be a tad rusty coming into this encounter. But he showed none of that in the first set.

In fact Rublev shrugged off a break of serve in the very first game to take a 5-2 lead in the opening set and while he missed four break-points in the eighth game to wrap up the set, he turned things around in the ninth to take the lead.

In the second, things went to serve till the fifth game before Rublev dropped his serve in the sixth. Kotov, however, failed to serve out the set at 5-3 and Rublev forced a second set tie-breaker which he easily won.

This win improves Rublev’s record on clay this season to 15-4. Can he now make it his 16th win for the year when he takes on a player who has had the edge over him.

Zverev Blasts Monteiro Away

After struggling to make it through the first round of the competition against Alex Molcan, Zverev did not spend too long to send Thiago Monteiro packing from the tournament. The German lost a mere one game in the encounter to make it to his fifth quarterfinal of the season.

Zverev needed an hour and one minute in demolishing Monteiro 6-1, 6-0 in his second round match.

Winning nearly 80% of his first serve points, Zverev saved both the break-points he faced while overcoming his opponent’s serve on five occasions in the encounter. The only game he lost came in the sixth game of the first set by which time he had already bossed the meeting.

The German has slowly but steadily grown back to his best in recent times after having been out of action for the whole of the second half of 2022. He made the semifinal at the French Open and followed it up with another semis appearance at Halle.

Against Rublev it won’t be easy but this will be one of the tests for him to see if he’s really back to his best and can protect the kind of head to head advantage he shares against Rublev.

Rublev v Zverev Prediction and Tip

This is a tough one to call but given the manner in which Zverev has gone about his business in recent times and his record against Rublev, we think it wouldn’t be easy to get past him here.
