Avanesyan Breezes Past Bondar

After battling past her first round opponent in a two and a half hour contest, World no. 69 Elina Avanesyan breezed past local favourite Anna Bondar in the second round on Thursday.

Avanesyan needed just an hour and 17 minutes to dispatch the world no. 144, 6-3, 6-0.

The 20-year-old was broken in the very first game by Bondar, but she bounced back well with a double break to take the opening set and never looked in trouble in the second set as she bagelled the Hungarian to reach her second WTA quarterfinal of the season.

Avanesyan, who had made it to the round of 16 at the French Open, was a quarterfinalist in Berlin. Interestingly, she was a lucky loser in both those tournaments. Now she has a chance to reach a first semifinal.

The sixth seed Russian had begun her campaign with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Rebecca Šramková.

Podoroska Dumps Out Siskova

Just like her quarterfinals opponent, Nadia Podoroska, too, won her second round match with a dominant performance on Thursday.

The 2020 French Open semifinalist needed just and hour and 13 minutes to rout Czech Republic’s Anna Siskova 6-3, 6-0.

The world no. 80 Podoroska saved 1 of 2 break points and converted 5 of 7 to reach her first tour level quarterfinal of the season. She has been ordinary at the tour level this year, but improved to 25-20 across levels following Thursday’s win. Her best came in Cali, Colombia this year, where she won her maiden WTA 125 title.

Podoroska had begun her Budapest campaign with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Storm Hunter in the first round, which means she has dropped just five games in the last four sets that she has played.

Can the 26-year-old reach her first WTA semifinal since the Chennai Open in September last year?

Avanesyan v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Avanesyan’s recent form has been very good and that includes a run to the four round of the French Open. She is also the higher ranked player in the contest, but lost her only meeting against Podorsoka this year. Expect a close match with Avanesyan advancing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Avanesyan to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
