Baindl Wins Two Matches on Saturday
After her quarterfinal was postponed due to rain on Friday, Kateryna Baindl had to play two matches on Saturday and the Ukrainian won both the matches to reach her first WTA final since 2018.
Baindl defeated Hungary’s Fanny Stollár. 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the quarterfinal and then edged out Claire Liu 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in the semifinal to advance to the her second career final.
In a two hour and 35 minute battle against Liu, Baindl saved three set points in the ninth game of the first set, before clinching it 7-5. The second set was also a hard fought one with Baindl taking it in the tiebreak. In all, Baindl saved 3 of 8 break points and converted 6 of 13 to advance.
Baindl’s only other final appearance came in 2018 at the Taiwan Open, where she finished runner-up to Timea Babos.
Baindl was 2-5 at the tour level before the start of the tournament this year, but following four wins she has improved that record to 6-5. Overall, she is 10-13 across levels and 6-6 on clay.
Baindl is yet to drop a set this week. She had begun the campaign with back-to-back wins over Hungarians Natalia Szabanin and Amarissa Kiara Tóth. She beat a third Hungarian in Stollar in the quarterfinal before beating Liu in the final.

Timofeeva’s Dream Run Continues
She wasn’t even supposed to be in the main draw after losing her second qualifying round in Budapest. But as luck would have it, Maria Timofeeva got a place in the main draw as a lucky loser and she made the most of the opportunity reaching the final in what is her first WTA Tour main draw appearance.
Timofeeva rallied from a set down to beat Daria Saville in the first round and then raced past Diana Shnaider in straight sets in the second round.
She continued her impressive run in the quarterfinals, as she came back from a set down to beat Kaja Juvan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and then on Saturday, she won another three-set contest, ousting former French Open semifinalist Nadia Podoroska in three hours and 14 minutes.
Both players broke each other seven times each in the match, with Timofeeva winning one more point than Podorsoka’s 114. The 19-year-old Russian won the key moments of the match to oust the world no. 80.
Can she cap off an incredible week by capturing her maiden WTA title on debut?
Baindl v Timofeeva Prediction and Tip
Baindl will be wary of Timofeeva, who has come from nowhere to make the finals. However, the Ukrainian has played a lot more than the Russian at the highest level and she will be banking on her experience in the final. Expect Timofeeva to put up a fight, but Baindl is most likely to win the contest.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Baindl to win: 1/2
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
