Rublev in a Struggle against Zapata Miralles

Nobody expected Rublev to struggle in his opener, let alone face three match-points against the 5/1 underdog Bernabe Zapata Miralles in his opening round encounter.

But that’s precisely what happened as Rublev ended up needing two hours and 53 minutes to make it through to the second round – a lot more time than he would have anticipated given the potentially one-sided nature of the contest.

Rublev came back from a set down to grab the second set 6-1 and it looked like his confidence was back and the third set would be a cakewalk.

It turned out to be a lot harder than that for the second seed.

He failed to break Zapata Miralles, in fact saving four break-points of his own and in the tie-breaker that followed, was 4-6 down at one stage. Rublev saved both those match-points and then another one at 6-7 before winning three points in a row to clinch the win.

Things should get easier from here on.

Altmaier Tames Gasquet

Richard Gasquet is an experienced pro but on clay he isn’t as good as the other surfaces and Altmaier took full advantage of that. Starting out a 3/5 favourite in the encounter, Altmaier clinched a 7-5, 6-4 win over Gasquet in a match that lasted an hour and 54 minutes.

Having made the second round of the Gstaad Open last week as well, Altmaier came back from a break down in the first set and two breaks down in the second to carve out the victory.

And one of the reasons he was able to do that was because he had 16 break-point opportunities in the match of which he converted six. Two ways of looking at it – he did create those many chances but then again he might not get as much from Rublev.

What Altmaier will hope for is a case of successive wins like had happened at the French Open where he overcame Jannik Sinner in the second round.

Can he now topple another top-10 player here?

Rublev v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Rublev might have struggled to make it through to the next stage but we expect this to be a lot easier despite the Altmaier’s obvious strengths on clay.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 1/2
