Muchova Battles Past Sasnovich

Karolina Muchova bounced back from a set down to knock out Belarus’s Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round of the Poland Open on Tuesday.

The second seed Czech threw away a 1-4 lead in the first set as the world no. 75 came back from two breaks down to go 1-0 up. The second set also saw Muchova go up a break twice but Sasnovich broke back on both the occasions. However, the world no. 18 dominated the tiebreak to send the match into the decider.

Muchova got an early break in the third set and then she held on to the lead to complete a 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 victory in two hours and 34 minutes.

It was an important win for Muchova, who played in her first grand slam final this year at the French Open, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek. She was then knocked out in the first round of Wimbledon. Tuesday’s match was her first since those two defeats.

A one-time champion on the tour, the 26-year-old is 26-9 across levels in 2023 and 16-5 on hard courts. She will be aiming to reach her fifth quarterfinal of the season on Thursday.

Sramkova Eases Past Ewald

Slovakian qualifier Rebecca Sramkova eased into the second round with a comfortable straight sets win over Poland’s Weronika Ewald in the first round.

The world no. 174 converted 5 of 10 break points and saved 1 of 2 to beat the world no. 1076, 6-2, 6-2.

Sramkova had made it past the qualifying rounds with a come-from-behind win over Britain’s Naiktha Bains in the first qualifier and a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Maddison Inglis in the second qualifying round.

The Slovakian player improved to 35-16 across levels this year. She has played in three ITF finals this year, winning one on clay and another indoor court. She finished runner-up in her third final, which was on clay.

Muchova is the superior player. She played a grand slam final this year and has been a consistent performer on the tour. Expect her to cruise into the quarterfinals.
