World no. 87 Fabian Marozsan is in good form this year and the Hungarian no. 2 got off to a fantastic start in Umag, knocking out Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets.

After winning the first set with a solitary break, Marozsan raced to a 5-0 lead in the second set with three breaks of serve. Cerundolo avoided being bagelled as he broke the Hungarian in the sixth game and then held serve in the next. But he couldn’t make a comeback as Marozsan served out the match in the next game for a 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 67 minutes.

Maroszan, who is one of the few players to have beaten Carlos Alcaraz this season, en route the fourth round in Rome, improved his tour level record to 4-3 and his overall season record to 34-20. That includes two titles at the Challenger level, both on clay. The 23-year-old is 28-11 on clay across levels this year and will be looking to reach his maiden tour level quarterfinal with a win on Thursday.

Munar Takes Down Eighth Seed Ramos-Vinolas

A quarterfinalist in Gstaad last week, Jaume Munar is within a win of reaching back-to-back quarterfinals.

The Spaniard held off the eighth seed and fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a two hour and 53 minutes three-set contest. Munar saved 6 of 11 break points and converted 6 of 16 to beat the world no. 65, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

A semifinalist in Santiago this year, Munar had also reached the fourth round of the Madrid Masters this season.

On Thursday, he will be aiming to reach a maiden quarterfinal in Umag, where his best was a round fo 16 appearance last year. If he does get to the last eight stage, it will be the third time this season that he would have reached that far.
