The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 29 year old American, and the Moldovan, who is four years older.

Giron Welcomes Hard Court Return

A return to hard courts is welcome for Giron, who has enjoyed his greatest success as a professional on the surface.

All 15 of his successes, which includes eight wins, on the junior tours have been on hard courts, and, last year he reached his first senior final.

Ultimately he had to settle for the runners-up cheque in San Diego, beaten by compatriot Brandon Nakashima.

This will be his first match since being knocked out of Wimbledon at the second round stage by the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, going down in a four set match.

Earlier in the year, though, he did reach back to back quarter-finals in Dallas and Delray Beach.

Albot Clinging on to Top 100 Status

The only Moldovan to win both an ATP single and doubles title, Albot was once ranked as high as 39 in the world, but that was four years ago, and it has been a long, slow decline since then.

He does, at least, have the consolation of having broken back into the top 100 in the world since the start of the year, although that status is tenuous and needs a good run of results in the American hard court season to preserve it.

However, he has failed to win a main draw match since losing to Karen Khachanov in the second round of the French Open.

He failed to qualify in both Stuttgart and Halle, and, although he did qualify for Wimbledon this year, he lost in the first round to Denis Shapovalov.

His one tournament since then, a Challenger event on clay in Romania, also ended in a first round defeat.

Giron v Albot Prediction and Tip

Although Albot has won both their two previous matches, they were on clay and grass. Washington, though, will be played on hard courts, the surface on which Giron thrives, and that makes him the clear favourite.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Giron to win: 7/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
