Brady Planning a Comeback

Jennifer Brady has had to wait a long time to step on the courts of a WTA event.

Her last top-tier tournament was in August 2021 – almost two years ago. A debilitating, chronic knee and foot injury has kept her out of commission since.

The 28-year-old was slated to come back in the French Open, but fitness concerns postponed her resurgence.

Brady, now ranked #1055,  is a former World No. 13 who greatly impressed the spectators by reaching the semifinal in the US Open 2020 and the final in the Australian Open 2021. Those remarkable deep runs showed great promise.

The question now is if Jennifer can reclaim some of that lost glory in her home tournaments. Of course, it is going to be challenging to start from scratch and build her rhythm, game by game. Nevertheless, it is not impossible as stranger things have happened on the tour.

Kalinina Coming off a Slow Spell

Anhelina Kalinina is set to start in the Citi Open on the back of a lacklustre grass swing.

Across four tournaments, she bagged just three wins while losing four – making it as far as round two in Wimbledon.

The Ukrainian’s season-best result came in the Italian Open, where she reached the biggest final of her career. Kalinina retired in the final against Elena Rybakina but not before dispatching Madison Keys, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Veronika Kudermetova en route.

Interestingly, that was also the only tournament where Anhelina won more than two matches in a week.

The 26-year-old, who is now World No. 28, must feel some pressure to prove to herself that she is not a one-hit-wonder. The Brady match does give her a decent chance to start strong.

Kalinina v Brady Prediction and Tip

Kalinina will start as the clear favourite here – largely on account of Jennifer’s lack of rhythm. Of course, it is not guaranteed that she will win – Brady is playing at home and if she is indeed at her best, she may pull off a great win.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Kalinina to win: 1/3
