Daria Kasatkina is set to start in Washington DC this week with a record of 23-17 and a singles ranking of World No. 11.
She is coming off a series of mixed results in June-July; she was the runner-up in Eastbourne and later made it to the third round in Wimbledon. Her last stint was the Palermo Open, where she fell in the quarterfinal to Jasmine Paolini.
As for Kasatkina’s form on hard courts, there is much to be desired. She is 5-8 at the moment, carried largely by her runner-up feat in the Adelaide 500.
That said, Daria has been quite good at the start of the US Open swing – evidenced by her two-time final feat at the Silicon Valley Classic (champion in 2022). Can she pull it off in the Citi Open too?

Mertens Fielding Doubles Momentum
Most recently, doubles number six Elise Mertens was the runner-up in Wimbledon with Storm Hunter. It was her 29th WTA doubles final and second of the season. The other one was also with Hunter in the Italian Open.
On the singles side, Elise is ranked World No. 30 with 19 wins and 14 losses.
Her best results there came in the French Open, Miami Open, and Madrid Open in the form of fourth-round appearances. Apart from these, Mertens was a semifinalist in the Monterrey Open.
Although highly experienced, her lack of singles form – especially when compared to Kasatkina, puts her in a position of disadvantage. That isn’t to say the Belgian cannot win – she has got the skills, after all, to pull the upset. However, it will take some doing on her part.

Kasatkina will start this match as the favourite, but anything can happen. Expect an entertaining match.
