Karatsev Returns after Wimbledon

It’s been nearly four weeks since Karatsev took to court for a competitive match. Having made the second round at Wimbledon, Karatsev was bundled out by fellow Russian Andrey Rublev there before he opted to take a break.

He will now hope to resume playing in hardcourt competitions in which he has, rather surprisingly, not had the best of records for the season.

Surprising because Karatsev has been a three-time hardcourt competitions winner on the ATP circuit but this year, he has won just three outdoor hardcourt matches.

Karatsev did this in Pune where he made the semifinal, following which he lost to Tallon Griekspoor and followed that up with opening round losses at the Australian Open, Montpellier Open, Rotterdam Open and in Doha.

Essentially he enters this tournament on the back of five successive defeats in hardcourt competitions. Good chance to break that streak against a player ranked outside the top 700?

Pannu Surprise Entrant Here

Before coming into this tournament, Pannu had featured in a mere three matches all season, spread across all circuits. He went down in all three, including one in the Davis Cup and another defeat at the Rome Challenger.

Pannu then didn’t play for five months before returning to feature in the qualifiers here.

Not surprisingly, he started off as a second-favourite in his opening qualifier against Denis Kudla but even more interestingly, it was a virtual mismatch according to the bookmakers. He was 9/1 to win it and that’s exactly what he did, overcoming Kudla in three after losing the first.

The Kiwi followed that up with another win against Bruno Kuzuhara in the second qualifier to set up a main draw match for just the second time in his career.

Tough to see him get past Karatsev despite playing better than he has in his career.

Karatsev v Pannu Prediction and Tip

While Pannu has done brilliantly in his previous two matches, it’s no surprise he starts off a 17/2 underdog here. That’s the second time he will kick-start the proceedings at such long odds in this tournament. Expect Karatsev to come through.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 5/6
