Gregoire Barrere v Shintaro Mochizuki Head to Head

Barrere and Mochizuki have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Barrere Hoping to Overturn Poor Hardcourt Record

Barrere isn’t too far from his career-best ranking of 49th in the world having reached that earlier this month thanks to his semifinal appearance at the Eastbourne International.

Since then, however, he has fallen 10 places on the rankings charts. Partly that has been down to his second round exit at Wimbledon and partly because he hasn’t played in any of the tournaments post that.

The good news for Barrere, at least as far as his ranking is concerned, is that he doesn’t have a lot of points to defend in the rest of the season. Sure he had some brilliant results on the Challenger circuit – winning two titles in the season and one during this period – but that doesn’t compare to the possibility of all the points he can accumulate over the next few tournaments.

This starts with the Washington Open where he enters with just a quarterfinal appearance on the Challenger circuit behind him in the same week last year.

A small concern, however, is that Barrere has not had a great hardcourt season with just a third round appearance at the Miami Masters to boot. He will need to turn things around majorly here.

Mochizuki Hasn’t Won a Main Draw Match

Inclusive of a match in the Davis Cup, Mochizuki hasn’t won in any of the eight meetings at the highest level. Which is not too surprising given he has a career-best ranking of 192nd in the world.

That’s one part of the story. The other has seen Mochizuki climb up the ladder from being 431st in the world last year to his current 200th rank and that has been thanks to his performances at the lower, Challenger level.

Mochizuki won his maiden title at any level earlier this year at the Barletta Challenger on clay and later made the semifinal in Ostrava at the same level.

In hardcourt competitions he hasn’t done as well this season but has still managed to rake up a 15-8 win-loss record in the Challengers.

Can he now register a maiden ATP level win against a player who hasn’t had a very good record on hardcourt surfaces?

Barrere v Mochizuki Prediction and Tip

Barrere is 3/5 to win this but we could well be looking at a tight battle that sees Mochizuki edge past his French opponent. Expecting a gruelling battle too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Mochizuki to win: 11/8
