Monfils Returns with a Loss

Having last played at the French Open before withdrawing from his second round match there because of a wrist injury, Monfils returned to competitive tennis two months later last week at the Atlanta Open.

He put up a fighting display in what turned out to be one of the matches of the tournament in Atlanta before going down to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the very first round.

While Monfils did lose, it would have given him the confidence that he still belongs to the highest level and with a bit of luck, could break back into the top 100 at the very least. And quickly at that.

One thing to be quickly added here is that other than defeating Sebastian Baez in the first round at Roland-Garros, Monfils hasn’t won a main draw match this year. That is a telling statistic but not entirely surprising given he was already returning to the circuit after having injured his foot last year.

The question is if he can remain fit throughout the course of this encounter.

Fratangelo Makes it Through the Qualifiers

Much like Monfils, the former world number 99 Fratangelo was out of action through the course of the last year and then again this year. That, combined with his lack of results has meant he is now nearly outside the top 700 on the ATP charts.

That has pushed Fratengelo into trying to get direct entries into Challenger tournaments this season, but even there he has won a mere three main draw matches.

Not surprisingly, he was the second-favourite coming into both of his qualifiers in this tournament.

He came back from a set down to overcome Mitchell Krueger in the opening qualifying round despite starting out a 13/10 underdog and then won another three-setter against Alexis Galarneau.

Monfils isn’t of the quality that he used to be in his prime but then so is Fratengelo and that could make it equally difficult for the American here.

Monfils v Fratangelo Prediction and Tip

Monfils starts off a 3/10 to win this and that seems to be reasonably-priced bet but for his fitness concerns. Instead going for a quicker end to the match here, one way or another.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Monfils to win: 2/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 10/11
