Pliskova and Coach Bajin Part Ways

Karolina Pliskova and Saschia Bajin have parted company for the second time, and on the eve of the start of the North American hard-court swing.

The news was confirmed by Bajin on Twitter, and it will be interesting to hear from Pliskova’s side on what fuelled the desire of parting ways, but nevertheless, it is a massive setback at such a critical stage of the season.

The pair started to work together in 2021, with Pliskova enjoying a run to her second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon. Although the two never won any trophies together during their first stint, Pliskova was a top-20 mainstay for the most part.

Last year, they stopped working together, but resumed their partnership in 2023, with the big-serving Czech tallying some strong results on hard courts in the first quarter of the season.

However, Pliskova’s form was wildly inconsistent since the start of the European clay swing, winning just three matches in six tournament appearances.

Baptiste Shocks Higher-Ranked Compatriots to Qualify

Hailey Baptiste produced a fabulous qualifying campaign in Washington by beating two of her established compatriots to reach her first WTA main draw since Charleston.

First, Baptiste accounted for American rising star Alycia Parks, winning that one fairly easily, 6-3, 6-1. And then she floored Peyton Stearns in the second round of qualifying 7-6, 6-2.

Baptiste recovered from a 3-5 down in the first set to force a tiebreak and which she won narrowly. That massive choke seemed to weigh heavily on Stearns’ head, who was broken twice in the second set.

Baptiste dominated on serve, firing nine aces, and winning 64% first-serve points and 70% second-serve points.

This will be the third time that the 21-year-old DC native will play in the main draw of the Citi Open. And it looks like she has drawn the short straw again. But given Pliskova’s dismal run of form, the undercard might have a chance.

Pliskova v Baptiste Prediction and Tip

Pliskova has been dire for a few months now and is having a lot going on in her head behind the scenes. Baptiste has previously pulled the rabbit out of the hat in Washington beating Madison Keys in the 2019 tournament. And her terrific qualifying run suggests she could be a pebble in Pliskova’s shoe here

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Baptiste to win a set -Yes: 8/13
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Baptiste to win: 15/8
