Can Etcheverry End Trophy Drought?

It has been a year of close things so far for Etcheverry.

He reached his first major tour final in Chile in March, but had to be content with the runners-up spot on that occasion.

And then the same thing happened to him at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in April.

Losing in the final of a Challenger tour final in France in May added up to a hat-trick of defeats.

However, as the top seed, he must consider he is in with a good chance of ending his trophy drought in Austria, and, having been given a first round bye, he started his campaign in some style with a straight sets defeat of compatriot Guido Andreozzi, the world number 240.

Etcheverry put his compatriot’s serve under pressure from the opening minutes of the match, and it was not long before he broke him. He added a second break as he wrapped up the first set.

When he then broke at the start of the second set, it seemed all over. Andreozzi briefly got himself back on level terms with a break of his own, but he then dropped his own serve straight away, and then once more, giving Etcheverry the opportunity to serve out.

Galan Comes from Behind to Beat German

Galan has recently reached a career high ranking, having got to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at Wimbledon.

That is despite being regarded primarily as a clay court player, having won six Challenger titles on the surface, and finishing runner-up in Sarasota in April, where he was defending the title he had won the previous year.

His campaign in Kitzbuhel began comfortably enough with a straight sets victory over Marco Cecchinato, conceding just two games in each set to the Italian.

There was nothing easy, though, about his second round match with Daniel Altmaier, and  he was forced to come from behind, as the German world number 51 took the first set.

Two breaks of serve in the second set enabled the Colombian to level the match, setting the stage for a battle to the finish in the third set.

Altmaier had a match point on the Galan serve, but could not convert it, and it all came down to a tie-break.

The German had another match point, again could not make it count, but then he saved two match points belonging to the Colombian.

Finally, Galan, having manufactured another match point, made one count.

Etcheverry v Galan Prediction and Tip

Whilst Galan showed all his battling qualities against Altmaier, Etcheverry is unlikely to be so generous on the big points. The Argentine is fully expected to win.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Etcheverry to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 4/5
