First WTA Quarterfinal of the Season for Martincova

Tereza Martincova reached her first WTA quarterfinal of the season, and it was only fitting it came on home soil, digging out her second successive three-set win of the week.

Martincova edged out China’s Yue Yuan 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and six minutes of play. After a troubled start to the match, Martincova failed to hold any of her service games in the first set and only got on the board by breaking Yuan early on.

But the situation improved considerably in sets 2 and 3, where Martincova had better numbers on her serve and break point conversion. She broke Yue Yuan a combined six times in those two sets, and only ceded her service games twice in the same span.

The 28-year-old has now reached her first quarterfinal of the season and remains on course to return to the finals weekend – a feat she achieved back in 2021.

Can she put the brakes on lucky loser Nao Hibino?

Hibino Upsets Hruncakova in Straight Sets

Nao Hibino is making the most of her second chance in the main draw. The Japanese former top 60 player lost in qualifying, but entered the event’s main draw as a lucky loser, beating Italian veteran Sara Errani in her first round.

But it was her 6-1, 7-5 win over resurgent Viktoria Hruncakova which raised many eyebrows. Despite going into that clash at evens with the bookies, Hibino made light work of a below-par Hruncakova who found her rhythm a set too late.

Hibino won over half of her return points in the match, which can be partly attributed to a poor second serve of Hruncakova which averaged about 41% second-serve points won. It also gave the Japanese player as many as 10 break points, of which five were punished.

Like Martincova, Hibino will contest her first WTA quarterfinal of the season, and both players could give their top 100 return efforts a massive boost with another win.

Martincova v Hibino Prediction and Tip

Hibino is showing a lot of patience with her point construction. Strangely enough, this is her second quarterfinal in a row at this event, both coming as a lucky loser. Last year, her run was curtailed by injury, but she’s looking up for it this week.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Hibino to win: 6/5
