World no. 34 Tomas Martin Etcheverry made it to the semifinal of the Kitzbuhel Open following a hard-fought come-from-behind win over Daniel Elahi Galán in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

Etcheverry missed out on three set points in the first set tiebreak, before conceding the set to the Colombian. The next set saw both players exchange an early break, before the Argentine got a second break late in the set to draw level at one-set apiece.

In the final set, it was the top seed who broke in the very first game and then held on to the lead to win the three-hour-and-11-minute match 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4.

Etcheverry, who had an opening round bye, had won the second round contest 6-2, 6-2 against fellow Argentine Guido Andreozzi.

Thanks to the two wins, Etcheverry improved his season record to 22-17 at the tour level. He has been particularly good on clay, where he has a 19-11 record at the tour level and 26-13 record across levels this year.

Etchevery’s most significant performances this season saw him reach his first two ATP finals in Santiago and Houston, but he finished runner-up in both the tournaments.

Additionally, the French Open quarterfinalist was also a finalist in Bordeaux Challenger this season, but couldn’t win that title either. Can the 24-year-old reach a third career final with a win on Friday?

Baez Marches on

World no. 72 Sebastian Baez marched into the semifinals with a third consecutive straight sets win in the tournament.

The 22-year-old Argentine, who thrashed Hamad Medjedovic 6-2, 6-4 in the first round and Roberto Carballés Baena 6-1, 6-2 in the second round, needed an hour and 27 minutes to dispatch Alex Molcan in the quarterfianl on Thursday.

Baez came back from a break down twice in the first set before breaking Molcan for a third time to take the opening set.

In the second set, both players exchanged an early break to stay on serve. But it was not long before the world no. 72 broke again in the set and then protected the advantage to close out the match 6-4, 6-3.

He has now improved his season record to 19-19 at the tour level, which includes a 17-12 run on clay. Baez will be aiming to reach a fifth career final on Friday. He is a two-time champion on the tour. Baez played his only final of the season in Cordoba which he won bybeating Federico Coria in the final.
