It was always expected to be a top-notch encounter between two players aiming to break into the top 10 at some stage of their careers and it was de Minaur who came out on top against Tommy Paul.
And as one thought, the match went into the third set with de Minaur coming through 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 26 minutes.
De Minaur, who hadn’t faced too many difficulties in getting past Thiago Tirante and Skander Mansouri in the previous two rounds, faced four break-points in the encounter and was broken thrice. This included one in the decider which gave Paul a 3-1 advantage and a chance to clinch the match.
Instead, it was the Aussie who came through with successive breaks of serve that took him to a 5-3 lead before he served it out the very next game to grab the encounter.
Can he now make it to his this third final of the season having won the Acapulco Open in Mexico itself this season.

Koepfer Makes it Three Straight-Set Wins in a Row
A quarterfinalist at the Atlanta Open last week, Koepfer has gone one better with his third successive win that has taken him to the semifinal.
And this time around it was Aleksandar Kovacevic who bore the brunt of the in-form Koepfer’s solid serving as he went down 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 53 minutes.
Koepfer saved a couple of break-points in the first set but when the pressure raised, he broke his opponent in the ninth game to grab the set in the next. The second set looked to be headed towards a photo-finish too as neither player gave way till the eighth game.
With the scores tied at 3-3, however, a string of four breaks of serves followed and at 5-5, a fifth service break gave Koepfer the lead.
Kovacevic aimed to make it a sixth break in a row but Koepfer proved to be too strong and served it out to clinch his semifinal berth.
