Ranked eighth in the world at one point this season – also her career-best ranking – Kasatkina has been unable to replicate results that are suited for a player of that kind of a ranking. And while she has been in decent form, the lack of deep runs in tournaments has led to the Russian slip down to 11th on the charts.
Her overall win-loss record of 24-18 bears testimony to this as does her record over the last few tournaments in which she was knocked out in the first round in one (at Berlin), made the final in another (at Eastbourne) and is 5-3 across the last three competitions.
Kasatkina now enters the US Open Swing with an appearance at a tournament in which she had first played in 2016. She had taken the world by storm by defeating the then-second seed Angelique Kerber and making it to the quarterfinal.
Since then, she has never been able to make past the second round here and that could be a record she would want to change here.

Mertens Hasn’t Had a Great Time Since the French Open
Since reaching the fourth round at Roland-Garros this year, Mertens has struggled to get going with her results at the highest.
She did win both her singles matches at the Hopman Cup but at the tournaments that count, more so from the perspective of the rankings, Mertens has faltered.
The former number 12 fell in the first round of the Eastbourne International while losing to Elina Svitolina in the second round at Wimbledon. And coming into the hardcourt swing at Washington last, Mertens was defeated in straight sets by Kasatkina as well
Overall though, Mertens will be satisfied with her performances in hardcourt competitions in 2023. She is 13-9 on win-loss on this surface this year and has made the third round at the Australian Open, semifinal in Monterrey and fourth round in Miami.
